MCP server for businesses: connecting AI securely to your own systems

HUMAN STRUCTURES

We use AI where it makes us better – here too. HUMAN STRUCTURES is an AI-generated image series, developed and curated by us. It shows what we stand for: structure, clarity, orientation. And how we work: with the tools of today and the standards we have always held.

An AI assistant is only as useful as the data it is allowed to access. An MCP server connects AI models to your tools via an open standard, with clear permissions and without handing over your data.

For a long time, every connection between an AI program and a business system needed its own solution. The Model Context Protocol, MCP for short, standardises this connection. Anthropic released the standard in November 2024 and in December 2025 handed it over to the newly founded Agentic AI Foundation under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation.

For businesses, that is good news: tools that are provided once via MCP can be used with different AI assistants.

What is an MCP server?

An MCP server makes tools and data available to AI models via a uniform interface. A tool might deliver an analysis from your ERP system, create a draft quote or search for a document in the knowledge base. The AI model decides which tool it needs for a task, and the MCP server executes it while checking the permissions.

MCP is supported by Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, among others. The exact range of functions depends on the product and plan.

Why your own MCP server?

Many providers offer ready-made MCP connections to common services. For industry-specific and specialised software, for your ERP system or for workflows based on your own rules, they are often not enough. Your own MCP server on a cloud server in the EU connects your systems individually and defines which fields are transmitted at all.

This keeps your database, tools and workflows on your server. Only what a task needs goes to the AI model.

Permissions per person and per tool

Authorised people connect their AI assistant with their own login. MCP calls are assigned to the logged-in person, roles are checked on the server with every access, and access tokens can be revoked. For knowledge search and analyses, permissions apply down to the level of individual documents and records before any content is passed to the model.

Just as important is what must not happen: content from documents or inputs cannot trigger additional permissions, and people who leave the company are blocked immediately.

Data protection: what goes to the AI model

With an MCP server, you control which data an AI model gets to see. Names, addresses and contact details are not needed at all for many analyses. We only use access plans whose contractual terms exclude training on your inputs and outputs, such as the API and the business plans from Anthropic.

Your company remains the controller within the meaning of the GDPR, and MOREMEDIA processes data as a processor. Before the start, we clarify the purpose, scope of data and deletion periods for each use case. How AI assistants work reliably with your own data is explained in our article AI assistants with your own data.

The AI model stays interchangeable

Because MCP is an open standard, it does not tie you to one provider. By default, we use Claude from Anthropic. If you switch models, the connection and instructions are adapted and the results are checked. Your database, tools, permissions and knowledge base remain. That is digital sovereignty in everyday work: your knowledge stays with you, even if the market changes.

The MCP server as part of the AI server

In the MOREMEDIA AI & automation server, the MCP server is one building block among several: database, web interface in your company's design, automation and a sandbox for new tools. Most employees work in the web interface. The AI assistant with MCP access is an option for teams who want to develop things further themselves.

The overall picture is explained in our article on the AI server for businesses, and you will find examples of automatic workflows under AI automation for SMEs.

  • Tools with permissions per person, every access checked on the server.
  • Data on your server in the EU, with an interchangeable AI model.

Frequently asked questions

What is an MCP server?
An MCP server provides AI models with tools and data via the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI to external systems.
Who developed MCP?
Anthropic released the Model Context Protocol in November 2024. Since December 2025, it has been with the Agentic AI Foundation under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation.
Which AI assistants support MCP?
Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, among others. The exact range of functions depends on the product and plan.
Does the AI model see all our data?
No. The MCP server checks permissions with every access and only passes on the data a task needs.
Is an MCP server GDPR-compliant?
That depends on the setup. Ours is designed for GDPR compliance: data minimisation, roles, logs, deletion periods and access plans without training on your data. The assessment is made for each use case.
Do all employees have to work with an AI assistant?
No. Most work in the web interface. The AI assistant is an option for teams who want to develop things further themselves.
